The Cruise, The Crab, The Cake - Smith Island, MD

Arrive in Crisfield, MD. Enjoy a little free time before we board the boat to Smith Island. This small quaint town known as the “Crabmeat Capitol of the World” because of the abundance and quality of blue crabs and soft crabs. Next, we will board the Chelsea Lane Tyler for a narrated tour to Smith Island, the last inhabited island off Maryland’s Coast with a population of 300 people. Many residents are direct descendants of the English settlers as a result of John Smith’s discovery of the island 1608. Today residents speak Maryland English. As you spend a little more time here, you may hear them speak a native Cornish English. Hungry? Upon debarking the ship, we will proceed to The Bayside Inn for a traditional mid-day supper. Get ready to dine on a traditional family style meal consisting of a crab cake, clam fritters, ham, corn, stewed tomatoes, green beans, homemade coleslaw, macaroni salad, rolls and butter, and a non-alcoholic beverage. The special treat of the day is the Smith Island Cake! Since 1800, women baked this cake to give to their husbands when they would go out to sea for the fall oyster harvest. This delicacy consists of between 9-12 layers. Wait until you taste it! This cake and local seafood are available for purchase so come prepared with your cooler. After lunch, you will have time to discover the island on your own. Golf cart rentals are available to tool around the 3X5 mile island. They say by the year 2300 the land is going to be completely submerged. Another option, visit the Smith Island Cultural Center. Learn about its history and view many artifacts. Return to Crisfield to board your coach. Return home with many fine memories of this rustic refuge.
